Though Brett's life took some pretty big turns with the new job, it wasn't the first time he'd experienced such life-changing events. He's been experiencing those since he was about three years old. Brett was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He isn't sure who his dad is. His mom, he doesn't keep in touch with anymore. It was when Brett was three that he was taken down to Houston. There he was introduced to Joanne, and he was offered the chance to change. Brett was given the option to be adopted. "At that age, there was no comparison," he said. "I'd be sharing a room with my brother in some little apartment." That decision is what really changed Brett's life. Brett grew up with a chance to make something of himself. He also grew up with the support and encouragement he needed. " Mom (Joanne) is the main reason that I decided to pursue art as much as I did," he said. " At an early age she saw that it would be a good area for me to get into. She's always been very encouraging, telling me if I want to do it, then do it and do it wallet make something of myself." Joanne was even the one who suggested he get into tattooing " When I was growing up, I used to do all of these really tiny drawing," he said. " She had read this article in the newspaper about some shop in town, and she said " I think you can do that.' Well, I was like ' No WA. That's too intense, ' but slowly but surely, it just kind of ended up that way." The fast forward version was that one of his friends also became interested in tattooing, which further kicked in the tattoo bug and eventually landed Brett in the apprenticeship, and later at Scorpion. I had been tattooing for about three? years when I went in to Scorpion again, " Beet said. "Dan Martin owned it. Dan was the first person to really sit down and look at my portfolio, and not just to look at my tattoo's and say, cool, you"re hired. He really took an interest in what I was coin, which was cool because no one had ever done that before. I t was then that I knew that this was the place where I wanted to be. " Brett said Joanne helped him kick the drag habits too. " I was so happy that I had finally faded it to where I wanted to be that I figured I didn't need that stuff anymore," he said. No at 25 years old, Brett is sure-footed when it comes to his art career. | |
